a. Fade the dye by making a 50–50 mixture of water and bleach. I used a brush to paint the bleach water on the jeans to create a streaky effect, and I concentrated most of the bleach water at the knees, where jeans tend to fade the most.
b. Pockets and edges should be frayed: Using a regular disposable shaving razor or sandpaper, fray the pockets and edges. These are especially useful for going over the zipper, waistband, and pockets. Simply scrape the razor or press the sandpaper back and forth until you achieve the desired effect. c. Pick and scrape at the denim with a bobby pin with a blunt metal edge to create tiny holes.
d. For large threaded holes, cut and pluck: This is my favourite method for distressing jeans because the end result is always so cool. Begin by cutting horizontal strips half an inch apart. Make the strips as long as the hole will be. Using tweezers, remove all of the blue threads from the strips. Denim jeans have white threads that run horizontally and blue threads that run vertically. You can achieve the horizontal white threaded look by removing the blue threads. I also ripped some of the white threads to make the opening look a little more sloppy.
e. Use sandpaper to soften: To make your jeans look (and feel) more lived-in, rub them down with sandpaper. Remember that the coarser the grit (i.e., the rougher the sandpaper), the more holes it will create in your denim, so if you only want to soften it, choose one that is less coarse.
